Film diary entry four
We started from the beginning today with starting filming after creating a new storyboard:
The next intertitle will appear on screen. This will also be in white text on a black background. Music will continue to play in the background. Fade to black.
We will then have a long shot of the man walking down stairs and a large building behind him. This will be filmed in London as it is conventional for action films to be set in large cities where it has the feeling that anything can happen. Its also very busy and will make it feel more dramatic and worrying that the little girl has gone missing. Fade to black.
More intertitles will appear on the screen. Fade to black.
Music still playing and fade to blacks.
We will have a close up of the mans worried face, allows the audience to sympathise with him. We will use a low angle shot as this makes the man appear strong and this is conventional of action films for the man to be needed to come to the rescue and save the innocent/ weak female character.
Our title of the film will then appear in bold writing so the audience remembers the name of our film. Music stops.
Close up of the little girls face to highlight her sadness, audience will be able to sympathise with her.
Filming Today
We will start with the intro for the institution that we are going to use. We have chosen Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures as this is conventional for action films and many successful action films that we like are produced by Warner Bros.
We will have our first title appear on the screen. this will have a black background and white writing as this helps it to stand out and this is conventional of other action film trailers, such as 'Taken'. by using intertitles we can leave the audience with questions that they want answers to, this not only makes them want to see the film but they begin to put themselves in the position of the characters of the film and this makes them feel more involved and interested. Fade to black.
We will then have a close up of the little girl, this establishes the first character and this will be in the style of a home video, we feel this will look really interesting and will really grab the audience. Again it allows the audience to feel involved in the film as they may reflect on their own home videos. This will gradually build tension. music will be playing in the background. Fade to black.
This will then return back to the home video style clips of the little girl. we will show her innocently playing with toys. Music continues. Fade to black.
We will then establish the father daughter relationship by having a clip of the dad teaching the little girl how to ride a bike. This will build further tension and suspense as the audience knows something bad is going to happen and this innocent scene makes the audience connect with the characters and this will make the next scenes feel more dramatic. Emotive music will continue to play, Fade to black.
We will have a close up of the little girl as this will allow the audience to see her happy and content expression. Music will still play, Fade to black.
More intertitles. Fade to black.
There will be a long shot of an empty swing and the music will gradually become louder to add to the dramatic effect. Fade to black.
There will be a long shot of the mum calling for her daughter next to the empty swing. Fade to black.
We will then have a close up of the mums worried face. By having a close up this means that the audience can clearly see how the mum feels and this will make it more emotive. She will be calling for Rebecca and asking where she is. Fade to black. The music will play quietly in the background to allow the audience to hear what the mum is saying.
More intertitles will appear on the screen. By asking the audience questions directly makes them feel more involved, this is conventional of action films.
We will then have a high angle shot of the man walking down the stairs, this makes him look more vulnerable. We will also make it look as though someone is spying on him by having the camera placed slightly out of view of the man, creating the illusion of someone hiding behind something. The music will continue to play and a voice over explain that the man won't get his daughter back until he conforms to what the bad guys are saying will also play in the background, this is conventional of other action trailers we have looked at. It also allows the audience to get a clearer idea of the films plot. Fade to black.
We will have a mid shot of the man walking down the stairs and this will allow the audience to see the busy city that hes in. Music will continue, Fade to black.
We will then have a shot of a car driving away. Car chases are conventional for action trailers. Music will continue, Fade to black.
We will have two shot of men having a fight, this conforms to conventions of action trailers. The music will continue and there will be a fade to black.
Over the shoulder shot of the men fighting. Music and fade to blacks continue.
We will have a shot of the wing mirror of a car, this will allow the audience to see the car chase and this conforms to other action trailers. Music continues and fade to black transitions.
We will have a close up of the gear stick. Music continues and fade to black.
We will have a shot of the man running and diving under a pole. We will not use a fade to black here as we want to show continuity in our trailer and the next shot will be of the man coming out the other side.
Music still playing and fade to blacks.
We will have a two of men chasing each other. Music and fade to blacks to build tension.
We will have a close up of the speedometer of a car, this shows that there is a car chase which will grab the target audiences attention as it is an action film convention. Fade to black.
Summer 2013 will appear in bold text so the audience knows exactly when the film is out.
To add further tension and surprise the audience we will then have a short clip of the little girl calling for help. This will be a long shot to allow the audience to see she is alone and vulnerable. We will use a high angle shot to reinforce her vulnerability and will show her hands clearly tied up. This conforms to action films and the female characters are seen as weak and need help/rescuing from the male characters.
Our end titles will then appear on screen, again showing the name of the film and release date so the audience will remember it.

Change of cast
We had originally filmed the first scenes with Amelia and Sam as the mum and dad, however, we have now had to change that to Amy and Spencer. This is because Amelia works on Sunday and Ellie and I both work on Saturday so it is difficult to film the scenes we need especially as the mum is in a lot of them. It would also be more convenient to change as Amy and Spencer are both at Therfield so it would be easier to communicate with them.
However, we are also going to slightly change our opening scene as after watching it we feel it is more like an opening 2 minutes, as although it establishes the characters relationships it dwells to much on their day to day life rather than drawing in the audience. We are going to make a new storyboard so that we can try and re - structure our trailer and re - arrange our scenes so that the trailer will be more conventional and have more of an impact on the audience.

Film Diary Entry Two
Friday 25th January
Today was our first day of filming, we started with the first scenes in the trailer as they were the easiest ones to start with because they were inside. It took longer than we thought as Rebecca and Sam have never met before, but it was a good scene to start with as it was relaxed so they could get to know each other.

Titles
Now we have decided the title of our film and the font and colour we want our titles to be we can start to design other titles we want in our trailer. We are not planning on having many titles with most of them probably being towards the end of the trailer, apart from the institutions at the beginning. We have not decided exactly where they will be in the trailer, we are going to move them around when editing our footage so we can see where they are the most effective.
We looked at the same font for both titles but changed the colour, we used the same colour for one that we're using for our main title. However, this looks quite plain and if we were to use this we would have to do something different to our main title in order to make it stand out more. We like the one where we added colour as the orange and red is associated with the title as it is the colour of fire. We also thought this stood out more, however we can put both into our trailer whilst we're editing and see which one is the most effective.

Film Diary Entry One
Sunday 20th January
We were hoping to start filming today, however due to the snow we can't. Once the snow has gone we will hopefully be able to start filming on a different day when everybody is available again. So we do not fall behind we are going to film the inside scenes whilst we cannot film outside.

Our chosen institution
Our institution for our trailer is going to be Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. We decided to use them both because they work together to produce and co - finance films. Both of these institutions are common for working on action films so would be good to use for ours. These are two institutions I did not research into earlier, however, after watching more action trailers we realized we wanted to use these institutions.
Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. is known as Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc or Warner Bros. Pictures. It is one of the major film studios and a subsidiary of Times Warner. Its headquarters are in Burbank, California and it was founded in 1918.
The company has many subsidiaries including Warner Bros. Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Animation, Warner Home Video, New Line Cinema, TheWB.com, and DC Entertainment. Warner owns half of The CW Television Network. Warner Bros. is also a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
Some well known action films produced by Warner Bros. are The Dark Knight Rises, Wrath Of The Titans, Inception, Clash of The Titans and Man Of Steel.
Legendary Pictures
Legendary Pictures, Inc is based in Burbank, California. It was founded in 2000 and in 2005 they formed an agreement with Warner Bros. to co - produce and co - finance 40 films with them.
They have four subsidiaries: Legendary Comics, Legendary Television, Legendary East and Digital division. All films theatrically released have been distributed by Warner Bros.
Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have worked together on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Superman Returns, Clash Of The Titans, Wrath of the Titans and Inception.
The institutions shown in this video are taken from The Dark Knight Rises, by editing out the other institutions we could see what our trailer would look like with these two institutions. We took the logos from The Dark Knight Rises because the logos have been changed to silver for the film and this matches our other titles we have designed.

Chosen title
We decided after designing titles for both names we preferred Playing With Fire. We decided we are going to use this title for our trailer:
We chose this one because after looking at other action titles we noticed that they are usually simple like this. We also like it because we think it is effective how Playing and Fire are bolder than with. We used capital letters and a silver colour as this seems to be common in action film titles.

Title design ideas
We used an online photo editor to start designing different titles and seeing which ones we think are both effective. We designed some for both possible title names, Checkmate and Playing With Fire. We decided we would do the titles in capitals and what font we wanted to use so we started to look at making different words fade/bold and trialing different colours to help see what was the most effective title design.
