Analysis of The Hunger Games trailer
The Hunger Games follows the story of Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to take the place of her sister in the hunger games where 2 teenagers from each of the 12 districts of Panem fight to the death. It is rated a 12A and an action film, its main target audience is teenagers of both genders.
The film begins with establishing shots of district 12 and the introduction of the characters Katniss and Gale. There are close ups of them describing the restrictions on their lives which raises questions among the audience as to what situation they are in. There is then a low angle shot of an air blimp flying over them very low, this is shown to the audience to be something important which encourages the audience to keep watching. The production company is then shown which is Lionsgate, this is a well known production company which sells the film further.
There are then scenes on which the reaping is shown, there are lots of of close up shots of the tense faces which causes suspense among the audience. There is then a mid shot of Katniss taking the place of her sister and the non - diegetic music becomes louder as there is a close up of Primrose's despair. This evokes sympathy among the audience as they already form attachments to the characters, this encourages them to go and see the film. The male tribute is then announced as Peetah which raises questions among the audience as to what will happen to both of them.
There is then a two shot of Katniss and Gale talking about there only being one survivor of the hunger games, this increases the tension of the trailer. The non - diegetic music then becomes louder and more dramatic as the inter titles appear. There is then a montage of shots showing how Katniss is prepared for the hunger games and an establishing shot of Panem. The other tributes are shown in the training sessions which interests the audience as they want to find out more about the Hunger games, this encourages them to go and see the film. The audience then sees the development of the relationship between Katniss and Peetah, the music fades out drawing attention to the moment which raises questions among the audience as to what will happen to them both if only one can survive. The trailer ends with the Hunger games beginning and the audience sees the whole of district 12's suspense which reflects upon the audience, this is an effective technique as it makes the audience want to go and see the film.
Although the genre of the film is action it is hard to tell from the trailer as to whether it conforms to any of the conventions as the trailer focuses on the build up to the hunger games rather than the actual events. This is effective as by not revealing any of the events of the hunger games many questions from the audience remain unanswered which makes them go and see the film if they want answers.
