Analysis of One Day Trailer

One Day is a film which follows the story of Emma and Dexter who met on the night of their graduation on the 15th August. The film shows where and what each of them are doing on that date for the next 20 years. The film is a 12A and a Romance, it attracts mainly a female audience due to the genre.

The trailer begins with the production companies and then goes onto an establishing shot of a city in the dark, these are common setting for Romance films. It also conforms to the conventions in the respect of music as the non - diegetic music is slow and meaningful indicating to the audience the genre of the film. The trailer then introduces the two main characters and there is a flash back to the night they first met, there is suggestion of feelings for each other which is a genre indicator for the audience.

There are then title screens in between scenes of when they first met, this draws the audience in as by setting the story at the beginning of the trailer the audience want to discover more about the characters. This is followed by a majority of long shots and mid shots in which we see the two characters lives developing and how different they are to one another, this raises questions among the audience as to what will happen next between them and encourages them to keep watching. The trailer highlights the fact is is based on the number 1 bestseller by David Nicholls which establishes an audience which are fans of the book. Although, there is then a twist to the trailer where there is a long shot of the back of a wedding dress and it is revealed Dexter is getting married, this affects the audience as although they haven't seen the whole film the characters have been established in the trailer so the audience feels an attachment to them.

The music then becomes slower and there is a sentimental moment between Dexter and Emma which is a cliche of Romance films which is probably why Romances are more popular among female audiences. The actors names who play the two main characters are then shown on screen, this encourages the audience to go and see the film as Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess are well known actors. Towards the end of the film there is a montage of Emma and Dexter's romantic moments, this leads the audience to want to see the film as they want to know what will happen between them both.

The final title of the film also attracts the audience to the screen as the title 'One Day' appears over a long shot of Emma and Dexter kissing which is different to films where titles are usually black screen titles. The trailer also conforms to romance conventions as their relationship develops throughout the film and their is more than one montage of their romantic dates together.
