Audience profiling

By looking at audience profiling of previous action films we will be able to see the gender and age these films targeted. By doing this we will be able to see the most popular target audience which will help us decide on our target audience and also the rating of our film.

Class key: AB - Upper - middle class
                  C1 - Lower middle class
                  C2 - Skilled working class
DE - Working - lower class

Audience profile for Taken

Taken was rated a 15 so targeted young adults, this is proven to be successful as the main audience of this film were aged 15 - 24 with 38% of the viewers. This age could be the majority of the audience because they are the age with a disposable income and have the time to go to the cinema. However, in close second with 37% was the age group 25 - 34 suggesting that this film targeted a younger audience as the percentage of viewers aged 35 - 44 is almost halved. The dominating gender of this film were male with 54% which is typical of action films, however there is almost a 50/50 split between both genders which is unusual for an action film. This suggests that Taken did something different in the film which engaged a female audience as well, this is something we could look into as we would like to target both genders for our film. The dominating class was C1 - the lower middle class, with the other 3 classes having an even split of 21% each.

Audience profile of Skyfall

Skyfall was rated a 12A however the majority of the audience was still aged 15 - 24 with 26% although 45+ also had 26%. This shows that this film targets a wide ranged audience, however there could be a majority in the 45+ aged range as this is the 23rd James Bond film with the first one being released in 1962, this demonstrates how the film attracts an older age as this audience would have grown up with these films. However the film still targets the range of 15 - 24 as they are still common target audiences of action films. Typically of action films Skyfall has a significantly larger male audience than female. The higher classes also seem to be the higher audience of this film, this could be due to the technology involved.

Audience profile for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was another action film rated a 12A, however the biggest percentage of viewer were aged 15 - 24 this is similar to the previous two action films which suggests that this should be our target audience. As is typical the second biggest age group was the 25 - 34 age group with the percentage slowly decreasing as the ages of the audience increase. This shows that the target audience of action films is between 15 and 34. As is also typical of action films males are the dominating gender with 62% of viewers being male. This has been the lowest female audience yet, this suggests that as the film does feature a lot of technology and gadgets that this doesn't appeal to a female audience. Similar to Taken the lower middle class dominate the audience with 41% of viewers coming from that specific class. As this seems to be the biggest perecentage of audience member for the films it suggests they have the most money and time to go to the cinema.

Audience profile for The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises was rated a 12A with its largest audience viewers being the ages 15 - 24 (36%) and 25 - 34 (21%) suggesting this should be the target audience to aim for. Males, again, dominate the gender of the audience, this demonstrates how action films specifically target males, this suggests that if we wanted a successful action film the audience to target would be male. The lower middle class, C1, also are the dominating class of the audience.
