Analysis of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol trailer
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is another action film which is rated a 12A, this has a similar target audience to Skyfall as it attracts a wide ranged audience. As it is the fourth Mission: Impossible film it already has a target audience to aim for as the fan base for the films as built up through the previous films.
The trailer begins with the institutions, one of these being Paramount, this immediately indicates to the audience that this audience has the potential to be successful as Paramount is a well know production company. The beginning of the film as a narrative voice over whilst scenes are shown of explosions and advanced technology This are also shown with fade to blacks, by having the explosions at the beginning of the trailers it immediately draws the audience, the voice over which is serious also attracts the audience as they want to find out more.
There are then establishing shots of Washington shown which indicates to the audience that this could be one of the main locations of the film. By having a well known place in a trailer it also attracts an audience to the film just because of the location. The narrative continues outlining the problem the film is going to challenge, the fade to blacks continue until there is a shot of the present and the man providing the narrative is shown, this also shows acceptance of the mission This draws the audience in as the plot has been outlined for them however no detail has been provided so there are many questions.
This is followed by a black screen title telling the audience of the film, it appears unexpected and keeps the audiences attention on the trailer. There are then two more title screens saying Re - think the impossible, this reinforces the title of the film and is accompanied by lots of different action shots and fade to blacks. There are a variety of shots, the majority being close ups which adds to the intensity of the trailer and keeps the audiences attention. The non - diegetic music is a song by Eminem featuring Pink called Won't Back Down, this is a selling point for the trailer as they are both well known artists, this further engages the audience in the trailer.
The part where Eminem raps increases the pace of the trailer, the stereotypical explosions, car chases and fight scenes are shown. However, it is effective as there are not so many fade to blacks and the action seems continuous and appears to match the music. This keeps the audiences attention and makes the remember the trailer, this encourages them to go and see it. Towards the end of the trailer the music stops and there are close ups of the main characters, this allows the audience to start to recognize the characters and makes them want to know more about them. More dialogue is also shown, this appeals to the audience as it develops the plot and the characters and also shows there is some humor in the film, this encourages the audience to go and see the film.
Car chases are the most frequent stereotype portrayed in this trailer, although this is effective in increasing the pace of the film we would not be able to recreate as many as are shown in this trailer as the cars are expensive and the scenes would not be easy to recreate. However, this trailer differs to other trailer in the respect that the end of the trailer is not the fastest paced, it is the middle which contains all the action, this is effective in engaging the audience through the action scenes then keeping their attention to show them more of the characters and the actual storyline. Although action films usually attract both genders in this trailer the font is grey on a black screen and appears to be quite masculine suggesting the target audience is more males than females.
